MARY FEDDEN. MINARETS AT SUNSET, MOROCCO.
Following their marriage in 1951, Mary Fedden and her husband, Julian Trevelyan, often travelled abroad until Julian’s death in 1998. They made numerous trips to the likes of India, Africa, Russia, America and throughout the Mediterranean, including France, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Malta/Gozo, Jordan and Tunisia. In 1968 they journeyed to Morocco. when ‘Minarets at Sunset’ was conceived. During such trips Mary Fedden would fill sketchbooks with numerous pencil and pen and ink studies of local life, landscapes and buildings that caught her eye. When back in her studio in Durham Wharf, Hammersmith, Mary would use her sketches as inspiration for more finished, larger works in watercolour/gouache or oils.
A RARE PAINTING FROM THE 1960s
During this time Mary was working full time as a tutor at the Painting School in the Royal College of Art and subsequently the Yehudi Menuhin School. As a result she had limited time for her own painting. Consequently, there are very few works from this time in her life compared to after her retirement when she was able become far more prolific.
‘Minarets at Sunset’ is a rare and wonderful example of Mary’s work from the 1960s, a period that is now so in demand by collectors of Modern British art. The colour palette is so typical of the 1960s, from the rich brown/greens of the earthy terrain, the temples and palm trees, and the mauves of the darkening sky, to the burnt orange of the sizzling setting sun and orange and pink of the minaret itself.
This painting is in really excellent, unrestored condition and beautifully presented in Mary Fedden’s original frame, handpainted in complimentary grey tones.
