Mary Fedden’s artworks are commonly flooded with her beloved bright colours and the use of flattened perspective – standard reproduction of three dimensional spaces is not her shtick. Bowl of Eggs is a superb example of the Fedden classic composition: the still life in the foreground with a curtained window behind, revealing a landscape, in this case a quiet night sky contrasted with a silvery moon. The table top comprises of a careful arrangement of Mary’s very favourite day-to-day objects: a bowl of eggs, melon, pears, greengages, a lemon and watermelon, highlighted against the uncomplicated dark background.

In his book Mary Fedden Enigmas and Variations, Christopher Andreae writes about Mary Fedden’s love of using black and white in her paintings – something than many artists often find somewhat difficult: “Mary Fedden is not afraid of strong, bright, rich colours; in fact, she loves them. Yet she knows the value of placing muted or even muddy colours near them so that her vivid reds, oranges, greens, or yellows can sing out. It is, however, in the refreshing, telling ways she uses those two ultimate colours, white and black, that she excels. ‘I think black is a wonderful colour,’ she enthuses. To her it is not gloomy at all. ‘Think of the blacks in Manet’s paintings. That young man in a black velvet jacket. Wonderful.’”
Bowl of Eggs is in excellent, clean, unrestored condition.
