Mary Fedden married Julian Trevelyan in 1951 and they remained the closest of companions until Julian’s death in 1988. Mary painted Julian throughout their life together, and then continued to do so right up until her own death in 2012. These paintings frequently depict Julian fishing on the beach, sometimes with a young child, as in this lovely painting. Julian by the Sea is one such iconic image.
Mary Fedden painted Julian by the Sea in 2005, only a few years before her death in 2012. It is a testament to her enduring love for the man whom she said she would marry the very first time they met, many years before it came to be. These paintings are highly prized by Fedden collectors and Julian by the Sea is a very fine example.
The work is in gouache on handmade paper, known for its opaque, matte finish. As Christopher Andreae writes in his book Mary Fedden Enigmas and Variations, “On the whole, her gouaches are small. She has a range of subjects and themes she only paints in gouache. Perhaps the more intimate scale allows for experiment and a degree of fantasy, dreaming or poetry. Her gouaches can be quite free, suggestive and atmospheric.”
Julian by the Sea is a really lovely Fedden artwork of the highest quality. It is well framed behind glass and is in excellent condition with no marks, visible dirt or discolouration.
