Mary Fedden travelled widely after marrying her husband Julian Trevelyan, including many trips in Europe, Africa, India, Russia and America. Following Julian’s death in 1988, she visited Jordan in 1989, staying with Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan and his wife and painting scenes such as Desert, Jordan, Oasis, Jordan, Garden at Aqaba, Jordan and this lovely painting Oasis Pella, Jordan.
Mary’s work is included in the personal art collection of Prince El Hassan and his wife, Princess Sarvath al-Hassan, who are keen collectors of her paintings.
The painting depicts an oasis near Pella (in Jordan). The landscape scene combines arid terrain with the vibrant, lush vegetation of the oasis itself, conveying a moment of relief from the surrounding harsh desert environment.
In many of Mary’s works she focuses on shades of one dominant colour, with other colours harmonising around it. Oasis Pella, Jordan uses shades of green, complimented by warm, earthy tones (sandy ochre, terracotta), and a bright Mediterranean blue for the sky, in a deliberate, balanced way. In his book Mary Fedden Enigmas and Variations, Christopher Andreae wrote: “Mary Fedden’s compositional balancing of solid and space, air and object, allows for a rich play of colour, but her colour too is ordered and balanced. She often says how much she dislikes too many colours in a painting, preferring one dominant colour, like a key in a piece of music. Everything else must harmonise with this dominant colour, which is a kind of surround.”
The modern-day archaeological site of Pella is located in the northern Jordan Valley and has been continuously occupied for over 8,000 years, from the Neolithic period up to the Islamic era. It is a major historical site known for its Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic ruins.
Oasis Pella, Jordan is in excellent condition and sits in Mary Fedden’s original wooden frame.
